Old Home Week 2016
39th Triennial Celebration
Welcome to the 39th Triennial
OLD HOME WEEK CELEBRATION
When the first Old Home Week celebration was held in 1902, I wonder if the organizers ever imaged that the celebrations would continue on for at least another 38 times. And that is what I find really remarkable about Old Home Week: it is not so much the idea of having a homecoming as it is the fact that these every three year celebrations now have occurred with great enthusiasm and without interruption for 114 years. In addition, Old Home Week celebrations today are especially remarkable in this era of social media and electronic interface where it seems like more and more of our “conversations” with one another are not actually done face-to-face. But Old Home Week seems to have been able to blend the best of both worlds: electronic social media has been an integral part of promoting this year’s celebration by connecting those who want to celebrate Old Home Week events, with the result that for one week in August, people will actually meet in person to talk, reminisce, and form or renew relationships against a backdrop of their common interest in the Greencastle-Antrim community.
But with all this wonderful heritage of Old Home Week and all the enthusiasm of its participants, it is critical to note that as you enjoy the many events planned for this week, none of this would be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who have spent thousands of hours in planning and carrying out the events for all of our enjoyment. Please be sure to thank them for a job well done!
Further, in addition to the wealth of information found in this Official Program, I encourage you also to refer to the Old Home Week website (oldhomeweek.org) for last minute changes in events and other timely information about Old Home Week not able to be included in this Program.
So on behalf of the Greencastle-Antrim Old Home Week Association, I welcome you to this year’s Old Home Week celebration. Whether you have had a connection to this community all or part of your life, or whether you just moved here yesterday, I encourage you to join in the fun and share the sense of community we have here in Greencastle-Antrim. Enjoy your week!
